Job Description & Requirements

Fashion Retail Merchandiser is responsible for deciding which fashion merchandise will sell in a retail outlet. A fashion merchandiser is also responsible for sourcing merchandise, maintaining supplier relationships, managing finances, doing the store layout and various other things. A fashion merchandiser is also referred to as a “Fashion buyer” or a “Fashion merchant”. A fashion merchandiser is someone who has a good sense of fashion and also who is a good businessman. This is a great profession for individuals who love fashion and glamour.

Retail Merchandiser Job Duties
Determines call schedule by reviewing priorities with supervisor; discussing special instructions, product promotions, new products, and price changes.
Maintains customer relationships by visiting with store managers, department managers, and employees; answering their questions; responding to special requests; describing product features.

Maintains store shelves by observing displays of company products; removing damaged products; tidying store shelves; providing optimum display of products.

Maintains inventory by restocking shelves with product from inventory; observing inventory levels; reorder when levels appear low; arranging for return and credit for damaged products.
Completes call report by observing display and pricing of competitors’ products.

Helps field sales representatives with special promotions by setting-up displays; checking daily on special promotions; observing customer reaction to special promotions; forwarding observations to management; removing promotions at end of special promotion period.

Provides information by reporting growth, expansion.

Maintains quality results by following and enforcing standards.

Enhances merchandising and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
Analyze current fashion trends and predict upcoming trends.

Source fashion merchandise from various suppliers to put up in the store. To decide what items should be displayed in the store, take into consideration the below factors: Current fashion trends, Possible future trends, the brand positioning of the store, Requirements and preferences of the customers visiting the store.

Work with the store manager to ensure an effective store layout & design and in-store product placement.

Manage financial accounts to ensure business is earning sufficient profits. Decide and manage product pricing, supplier margins, and customer discounts.

Take customer feedback from time to time to better understand their preferences.

Research on fashion trends and happenings through journals, magazines, blogs, fashion shows, etc.

Build and manage relationships with fashion designers, fashion writers, textile manufacturers, customers, etc.

Attend fashion shows and events and various social gathering to source products and to build relationships.

Do paperwork and administration related work including supplier contracts, purchase orders, inventory management, sales tracking, etc.

Skills/Qualifications:
Must have a passion for working in the fashion industry and should have a keen eye for the latest & upcoming fashion trends.

Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities. Should be able converse fluently and effectively in English.

Must be able to master product knowledge and quality focus, attention to detail

Be very customer focused and build client relationships

Can do in store promotions and competitive analysis

Good reporting and analysis skills

Excellent socializing skills and a people friendly nature.

Hard working and vibrant personality.

Highly creative and energetic individuals.

Knowledge of accounting, finance and mathematics.

Excellent negotiation and sales skills.

Basic awareness of computer fundamentals and fashion related newswires, blogs, websites, etc.

Work Conditions

Work out of the premises of the fashion store.
Will have to move around extensively within the city to attend fashion shows & parties and meet suppliers & customers.
Will have to attend fashion events and social gatherings generally scheduled in the late evening/night.

Educational Requirements
Must be an undergraduate or graduate in any field of education.
Candidates who have completed a diploma or a degree in fashion designing or fashion management or fashion merchandising will be preferred.
Candidates who have previously worked in the field of fashion as a merchandiser, designer, fashion consultant or as a fashion store manager will be preferred. Former models and fashion writers & bloggers may also be considered.
