A business analyst should be able to listen to the customer intently in order to understand what the customer wants and needs (and in some cases, let the customer know what she wants and needs). He or she knows not only WHAT, but also WHY.
By understanding the real need of the customer, the BA can clearly define each feature of the system which will meet the customers’ requirement. He or she must also be able to distill the wants from the needs.
Once the BA has clearly defined the requirements, and consequently, the features of the system, he or she must be able to communicate this to the programmers in a manner which leaves no room for doubt – the programmers must understand exactly what is expected from them. Likewise, the customer must know exactly what they are getting.
All of the above must be clearly documented in the standard company format, based on the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge.
The business analyst should also be able to wear the hat of a project manager. He or she knows what features must be developed, and by when. The BA/PM knows the milestones, and holds the project team accountable for those milestones. He or she communicates with the customer closely, letting the customer know exactly what is going on. The BA/PM is the bridge between the customer and the programmer.
The BA/PM’s job starts with a customers’ problem. It ends when the customer has a smile on their face.
